In August of 2019, Kaiya and her friend Lucy Nickels decided to collaborate on an idea which looked at creating a platform for women and gender non conforming people to share their creative endeavors. This would include organising a number of events as well as creating shareable content to help build a community of like minded people.

From this, BIG LONER was born and Kaiya and Lucy began working on how they could consolidate their brand and stand out in the local Melbourne music scene.

Kaiya used her skills on Adobe Illustrator and Canva to design the logo for BIG LONER and was in charge of creating content to post across a number of social media platforms. Kaiya was able to bring in skills from her university classes as well as previous experiences which allowed her to make decisions on a marketing campaign and how the brand and identity of BIG LONER would be consolidated.

Kaiya and Lucy decided for their first project they were going to create a zine with a launch party to coincide with it. Securing a line up was their first task. Due to being a new collective they thought they would focus on booker newer acts and in the end locked in a five band female fronted line up to take place at the Gasometer upstairs.

Creating a Zine

Throughout the process of booking the event Kaiya and Lucy were also compiling content to release in the zine. The girls were lucky to have submissions from a number of different women and gender non conforming artists as well as some amazing art from one of the bands on the line up. Kaiya used her skills in Adobe Indesign to set out the final layout of the zine and from there the zine was ready to print and assemble.

Big Loner Launch Party

The launch party was a success. The girls received great feedback from the Gasometer who said they would be happy to have them back again and all bands who played were so stoked to be a part of an all female fronted line up. Overall it was a really positive experience and Kaiya loved being part of an event that showcased women on a number of different levels including sound tech, performance and photography. It definitely cemented that this was the kind of events and projects Kaiya wanted to be apart of in the future.
